There are important steps you can take to reduce the risk of a fire in your home and office. Prevention is the best way to protect your family, pets and employees.

There should be a smoke detector in every level of your home, including inside bedrooms. If possible, interconnect smoke alarms in order that when one sounds, the other alarms will sound too.
It’s not enough to install smoke detectors. You need to also test your smoke alarms on a regularly basis and change the batteries twice a year or when the alarm alerts you with a chirping sound. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. A good guide is to change the batteries when you change your clocks.
If you are cooking, it’s important that you don’t leave your stove or oven unattended.
If you use space heaters, do not place them close together, and turn off your space heaters when you are not in the room, and do not leave heaters on overnight when you are sleeping.
Keep any type of lighter and matches out of reach of children.
Inspect electrical cords and replace any cords that are damaged.
Do not leave lit candles unattended, and keep candles at a safe distance from anything that is flammable. Always blow out candles when leaving the room and going to sleep.
Prepare a fire escape plan and share it with every member of your household and practice it at least twice a year. It’s important to educate children on what to do in the event of a fire, including reviewing and practicing the escape plan and how to dial 911. You can also include your pets in your fire escape plan.
